YouTube is moving to a system where views will count the moment a video begins to play (w/ no minimum watch time)
YouTube is moving to a different system of tracking views that more closely resembles how Instagram, TikTok, and X work.
YouTube put out a statement that said: “Starting 8/24, views will count the moment a video begins to play (w/ no minimum watch time) across all formats (VOD, Shorts, & Live). We’re standardizing views to reflect creators’ true exposure across YouTube, making it easier to show their value to brand partners. This update won’t impact creator earnings or YPP eligibility.”
What this essentially means is that any video that is clicked on is counted as a view, even if it was under a second. Now, YouTube states that this is to reflect creators’ true exposure across YouTube, making it easier to show their value to brand partners. I am not sure how it is true exposure if a video that was watched for under a second. That’s not even enough time to get to the Squarespace ad!
At least in my opinion, it’s just inflating view counts and encouraging more AI slop. A lot of these platforms are clearly prioritizing quantity over quality, and how do you police bot views when a video only needs to be clicked on for less than a second to count as a view. For YouTube it is a win win, more views, equal more revenue.
The reaction on X was as you would expect.
If you look at YouTube’s Metrics To Know section, it states that for Engaged Views (How many times viewers stayed to watch past the initial seconds, not including any loops) it only applies to Shorts. For Videos and Live streams, this metric is available but it’s the same as views.

Hi everyone! Last year, we updated how we count public views for Shorts to better capture how viewers watch on YouTube. Now, we’re aligning all other video formats to this same standard for consistency across the platform. Beginning on 8/24/2026, a view will be counted the moment a video begins to play—from the very first frame. This standard will now apply globally across all formats. Historically, we’ve used multiple view counting systems across different formats. However, we’ve heard that creators want to eliminate this metric confusion and accurately understand their true exposure, which is why we’re making this update! Impact on YouTube Analytics & performance metrics:
- We’ll keep the original view metric, called “Engaged views,” in YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode so creators can see how many viewers choose to continue watching their video.
Impact on monetization:
- This change will not impact creators’ earnings or how they become eligible for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP):
- Creator earnings will continue to be based on ”Engaged Shorts views” and “Engaged Watch Hours,” which you can view in YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode.
- There is no change to YPP eligibility. YPP entry requirements will also now be referred to as “qualified Shorts views” and “qualified watch hours” (previously “valid public Shorts views” and “valid public watch hours”).
From 8/24 onwards, you’ll start to see the new view metric applied wherever views are shown on YouTube (which means creators will likely see their total view counts increase faster moving forward).
