STL352: Miserably in Love With Wood
Last weekend was Woodworking in America 2025, where woodworkers across the country gathered together at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The weekend was kicked off by an open house at Woodsmith studios, then two days full of presentations and an exhibit hall with vendors showing off their tools and machines.
These gatherings always bring out passionate woodworkers. Every single class was full of attendees taking notes, asking questions, even introducing new ideas. Getting the chance to pop into classes and catch the excitement from the crowd is always such a fun experience. The topics varied in the best way, and I took home great information from every single one I attended. Beth Ireland set me up for success the next time I visit the lathe, and Bob Benkhe has me thinking more seriously about how I use wood glue.
Being surrounded by other woodworkers over the weekend is simply one of my favorite things: I never have to reel in my joy and excitement over what I do, and the people around me feel the same way. I highly suggest trying to make a woodworking show in your area, especially as most of us are alone or working solo a lot of the time.
We recorded this episode of Shop Talk Live at Woodworking in America. Alex Dolese and Shea Alexander had many words of wisdom to share with the audience. From Shea’s new discovery with mineral stain in wood, and Alex’s dedication to respecting wood movement, it makes for a great episode, which we are happy to share with you!
