Ryan Seacrest’s Response to Jim Thornton Wheel of Fortune Suspension

Jim Thornton, best known as the announcer of Wheel of Fortune, has been suspended from the hit game show. According to Hollywood insider Rob Shuter, host Ryan Seacrest has no interest in getting involved.

“Ryan doesn’t do drama — especially somebody else’s,” a TV insider told Naughty But Nice. “His survival instinct is incredible. When controversy arrives, Ryan doesn’t play hero. He lets the executives handle it and keeps moving.”

They continued, “Ryan protects Ryan. He doesn’t publicly challenge the network, pick unnecessary fights or attach his brand to another person’s crisis. If there’s trouble, he creates distance — fast.”

The source added that Seacrest plans to act as if nothing happened. “Ryan will walk onto that set, smile for the cameras and work with whoever Sony puts beside him,” they explained. “He understands the golden rule of television: nobody is bigger than the show. Ryan doesn’t rescue people. Ryan survives.”

TMZ was the first to report Thornton’s suspension on Tuesday, September 1, with producer Sony Pictures Television telling the outlet, “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”

The studio didn’t specify why Thornton was suspended, but TMZ reported that the alleged incident took place on a commercial flight in May 2026. A passenger reportedly complained about him to a flight attendant, and sources with direct knowledge said the pilot called ahead to have police meet Thornton when they arrived. Thornton was questioned and soon released.

American Airlines told TMZ, “On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard.”

On September 2, Thornton’s lawyer spoke with TMZ and denied any wrongdoing. He claimed the longtime TV announcer “did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime.”

“When questioned about the complaint made by a fellow passenger on the flight, law enforcement spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told my client he was free to go,” his attorney added.

On Thursday, September 3, TMZ published photos allegedly showing Thornton scrolling through a chatroom for pedophiles on his laptop during a flight.

According to a passenger, she noticed messages on Thornton’s screen that read “Couple of cute boys and a hot little girl,” and “All-you-can-eat Boyfett,” the latter referencing a type of restaurant to find children. The passenger said she informed a flight attendant and shared the pictures with the crew.

​Thornton’s attorney told TMZ he had “become active in suicide-prevention advocacy since losing a close family member to suicide two years ago, and he has spent time visiting chat rooms offering support to individuals suffering from suicidal ideation.”

The lawyer said he frequently visited the suicide prevention website 988lifeline.org and its chat forum, chat.988lifeline.org. Thornton claimed someone from the support group sent him a link to lifeline.chat, a chatroom for people with pedophilic thoughts, but he left immediately upon realizing the nature of the forum. However, timestamps reportedly show he stayed in there for nearly an hour.

His lawyer emphasized that lifeline.chat is “not unlawful, there is no unlawful child pornography or other pedophilic content, and my client never viewed, downloaded or consumed any child pornography whether on that commercial flight in May or at any other time.”
